Research presented at the American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) virtual conference held earlier this month assessed impressions of board-certified specialty nurses among a national sample of more than 2,000 adults. The findings are based on a comprehensive survey conducted by Morning Consult on behalf of ABNS in June of 2020. Among their key discoveries, Morning Consult's analysis identified that three in four adults support requiring nurses to receive a specialty nursing board certification.
A majority of adults surveyed report a favorable view of board certified specialty nurses
Seventy-five percent of adults surveyed reported that they feel it is important all nurses are required to have a specialty board certification, and two-thirds support hospitals requiring their nurses to have a nursing board certification in order to be employed at the hospital. Furthermore, those participating in the survey were 74% more likely to seek medical care form a board certified specialty nurse after reading the following statements:
- Thorough continuing education requirements, board certified specialty nurses are committed to life-long learning and maintaining their certification.
- Board certified specialty nurses are clinical experts in their field, dedicated to providing quality, evidence-based care.
Patients need to be informed of nurses' board certified status
Findings also suggest it's important for nurses who maintain board certification to communicate that directly to patients. Just 4% of adults surveyed who had received care from a board certified nurse indicated that they were aware of their nurse's credential because they asked. Rather, the vast majority became aware of their nurse's certification because it was displayed on their badger or in the office or because they were directly informed of it during their visit.
